Artistic Styles Used in Computer Games

PHOTOREALISM
Photorealism is an art style that tries to make an object or person seem as real as possible almost as if you were looking at a photograph of said object/person. This art style is featured in in many games such as Last Of Us , Max Payne 3 and Call Of Duty Black Ops 2.
Most game development company’s do this to show off what there game engines can do and attract more companies to use their engines and gain more customers.

     CELL SHADING
Cell shading is used to define characters using brighter and bolder colours and often using thicker lines for shading to make things like muscles and bevelling on a car stand out even more
Cell shading is used by games like borderlands, street fighter and team fortress 2.

ABSTRACTION
Abstraction in gaming is a game that relies on basic shapes rather than super defined characters.
Games that use this concept are Tetris, Pac man and hotline Miami

EXAGGERATION
Exaggeration is used in games to make to make everything look and feel better than it would in a realistic game also it gives characters body’s you wouldn’t be able to obtain in real life.
Also all characters senses can be enhanced more than a real person can ever imagine having , giving characters amazing reflexes and an intense pain threshold .
For instance characters from gears of war has insanely defined muscles giving them the strength of a tank, they could walk through gun fire and get riddled with bullets and walk it of in under a minute.
